Dielectric perturbations: anomalous resonance frequency shifts in optical resonators
نویسندگان
چکیده
Small perturbations in the dielectric environment around a high quality whispering gallery mode resonator usually lead to frequency shift of modes directly proportional polarizability perturbation. Here, we report experimental observations strong shifts that can be opposite and even exceed contribution perturbations' polarizability. The frequencies lithium niobate are shifted using substrates refractive indices ranging from 1.50 4.22. Both blue- red-shifts observed, as well an increase linewidth, when moved into evanescent field mode. We compare results theoretical model by Foreman et al. provide additional intuitive explanation based on Goos-H\"anchen for optical domain.

Coupling-induced resonance frequency shifts in coupled dielectric multi-cavity filters.
Coupling-induced resonance frequency shifts (CIFS) are theoretically described, and are found to be an important fundamental source of resonance frequency mismatch between coupled optical cavities that would be degenerate in isolation. Their deleterious effect on high-order resonant filter responses and complete correction by pre-distortion are described. Analysis of the physical effects contri...
متن کاملTopology optimization of dielectric ring resonators in application on laser resonators and optical sensors
Micro-ring resonators have tremendous potential in optics with applications to low threshold microcavity lasers and optical sensors. The optical modes, set up in these devices by emissions from input light, form circular continuous closed beams governed by internal reflections along the boundary of the resonator. The circular mode shape is called a whispering-gallery (WG) mode. Optical resonato...
متن کاملResonance Frequency of Optical Microbubble Resonators: Direct Measurements and Mitigation of Fluctuations
This work shows the improvements in the sensing capabilities and precision of an Optical Microbubble Resonator due to the introduction of an encaging poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) box. A frequency fluctuation parameter σ was defined as a score of resonance stability and was evaluated in the presence and absence of the encaging system and in the case of air- or water-filling of the cavity. Fu...
متن کاملModal frequency degeneracy in thermally loaded optical resonators.
We observe power coupling from the fundamental mode to frequency-degenerate higher-order spatial modes in optical resonators illuminated with a 30 W laser. Thermally-induced modal frequency degeneracy facilitates power transfer from the fundamental mode to higher-order modes, reduces power coupling into the cavity, and triggers power fluctuations. Modeling thermoelastic deformation of a mirror'...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional optical ring resonators based on radial Bragg resonance.
A Bragg-reflection-based ring resonator is proposed and analyzed. Closed-form expressions for the field and dispersion curves for radial Bragg gratings and photonic bandgap crystals are derived. The required gratings exhibit a chirped period and a varying index profile. Small bending radii and strong control over the resonator dispersion are possible by the Bragg confinement. Large free spectra...
